Yvonne Atwell

Born in Nova Scotia. She moved to Toronto to find work. She spend 20 years as the co-ordinator of patient services at Mount
Sinai Hospital. In 1984, at age 41, she returned home to Nova Scotia.


She has been the presidents of the Black United Front and the African Canadian Caucus, a chairwoman of the Indigenous Black
and Mi'kmaq Program at Dalhousie University, a member of the Metropolitan Board of Trade's small business committee, a member of
the George Washington Carver Credit Union executive board.


In 1996 she ran unsuccessfully for the leadership of the Nova Scotia NDP. She was a seat in the legisture in 1998 for the
riding of Preston, becoming the 1st black woman MLA in Nova Scotia. She lost her seat in the 1999 provincial election.


She is currently the director of the African-Canadian Employment Clinic.
