Educated al Rennes, he took up the profession of journalism, coming to Paris in 1867. He was for a short period editor-in-chief of L'Independant du midi of Nîmes, but joined the staff of Le Rappel on its foundation, and worked subsequently on other journals.

He took an active part in municipal life, and waged a keen campaign against the prefecture of police, for which hi suffered six months' imprisonment. Yves Klein

Yves Klein (28 April 1928 - 6 June 1962) was a French artist.

Klein was born in Nice. Both his parents were painters. He lived in Japan for a time, becoming an expert in judo, before settling in Paris and beginning to exhibit his work there. Many of these early paintings were monochrome and in a variety of colours.

By the late 1950s, Klein's monochrome works were almost exclusively in a deep blue hue which he eventually patented as International Klein Blue (IKB, =PB29, =CI 77007). As well as conventionally made paintings, in a number of works Klein had naked female models covered in blue paint dragged across or laid upon canvases to make the image, using the models as brushes. Sometimes the creation of these paintings was turned into a kind of performance art - an event in 1960, for example, had an audience dressed in formal evening wear watching the models go about their task while an instrumental ensemble played Klein's The Monotone Symphony (http://www.ubu.com/sound/klein.html), which consisted of a single sustained note.

Klein also made sculptures in deep blue, and worked with fire, creating some sculptures using it, and setting fire to some of his canvases, thus making scorched holes in them.

Klein is also well known for a photograph, Saut dans le vide (Leap into the Void), which apparently shows him jumping off a wall, arms outstretched, towards the pavement. Klein used the photograph as evidence of his oft-mentioned unaided lunar travel. In fact, "Saut dans le vide" was published as part of a broadside on the part of Klein (the "artist of space") denouncing NASA's own lunar expeditions as hubris and folly.

Klein is considered an important figure in post-war European neo-Dadaism. He engaged in such provocations as "publishing" a chapbook containing only empty pages and selling empty spaces in exchange for gold which he then threw into the river Seine.

Klein died in Paris of a heart attack.

Yves Langlois

There are three "Yves Langlois" on the public scene in Canada: one is a film director, the second is a film editor, and the third has been a member of the Front de Libération du Quebec (FLQ). This article discusses the third.

Yves Langlois, a.k.a. Pierre Seguin, born in 1947, was a member of the Quebec terrorist group calling themselves the Front de Libération du Quebec (FLQ) and responsible for terrorist operations during the 1970s in Quebec.

He was arrested in France for possession of illegal firearms and served 2 years in a French prison, where he may have learned the skills he later used in bomb-making, assassination and kidnapping. In August of 1970, he and other terrorists from Quebec traveled to Jordan to train with Palestinian commandos. At the same time, members of their group in Montreal announced they would begin a policy of "selective assassination."

Langlois was a member of the Liberation Cell of the FLQ that kidnapped James Cross, the British Trade Commissioner to Canada, triggering the 1970 October Crisis. The Liberation Cell threatened to execute Cross, making demands that included money and the release of other convicted terrorists. The kidnappers eventually negotiated Cross's release without achieving any of their goals except safe passage out of Canada for themselves: Langlois and four others were granted refuge in Cuba. However, in 1974, a report from the Canadian embassy in Paris, France indicated that Langlois was living in Paris.

Langlois returned to Quebec in June of 1982. He was arrested and charged for his crimes and on September 27, 1982 he was sentenced to two years in prison less one day for his part in the kidnapping of James Cross. On July 19, 1983—less than one year later—he was released on parole.

Yves Michaud

Yves Michaud, born February 13, 1930 in Acton Vale, near Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada is a prominent sovereignist public figure and member of the Parti Québécois.

In 1959, Michaud received a Canada Council grant to study journalism in France at the Université de Strasbourg. He then began a career as a journalist for the Clairon in Saint-Hyacinthe. He was later chief editor of La Patrie and also had a chronicle for the magazine Sept jours.

He joined the ranks of the Liberal Party of Quebec and was elected in the Gouin riding in the 1966 Quebec election, which the Liberals lost. He became friends with fellow Liberals René Lévesque and Robert Bourassa, who would both later become premiers of Quebec.

He joined the Parti Québécois and was defeated as a candidate in the 1970 election and the 1973 Quebec election. He returned to journalism at Le Jour, a newspaper that shut down in 1976.

In 1979, he was in charge of the Quebec Government House of Paris.

Robin Hood of the Banks

Sometimes called Robin des banques (Robin Hood of the banks), Yves Michaud is known by the people of Quebec for his crusade against the practices of large corporations. In 1993, he founded the Association des petits épargnants et investisseurs du Québec (Association of small savers and investors) and won a number of victories in court.

The Michaud Affair

Main article: Michaud Affair

Yves Michaud was at the centre of the so-called Michaud Affair during 2000, in Quebec. It was a political scandal that revolved mostly around his comments about the Jewish people and Lionel Groulx and the B'nai B'rith's reaction. One recollection of his comments, amongst other things, was that he stated that the Jewish people had suffered, but that other peoples had also endured great tragedies. ("The Jews weren't the only people to have suffered.") However, as the affair went along, due notably to Michaud's open defense of Quebecker/French-Canadian ethnic nationalism, he was growingly portrayed by some as an antisemite and denier of the Shoah, which he has always categorically said he was not. It culminated in a Motion of Blame from the National Assembly of Quebec. Lucien Bouchard is also said to have been influenced by the weight of the affair (which received extremely negative coverage in the international press) to leave his function of premier of Quebec in 2001 (although he did not admit it). Michaud still fights to this day for recognition of the Motion of Blame as an "antidemocratic mistake".

The Michaud Affair reawoke the bitter, very emotive and controversial divisions within the Parti Quebecois between proponents of "linguistic nationalism" (soft nationalists, aka "nationalistes mous") versus "ethnic nationalism" (hard liners, aka "purs et durs"). This divide also reflects the contrasting PQ-envisioned "ideal Quebec society" between its more Social-democratic ideological pole versus traditional "race or ethnic"-based nationalism within the party.

This Affair must be interpreted in the context of long standing historical tensions between some more radical factions within the Quebec nationalist movement and the English-speaking and Jewish communities of Quebec ("anglophones"), which can be allegorically compared to the Marxist manichean analogy of "class war" (i.e. French secular/catholic Quebeckers vs English protestant/jewish Quebeckers).

Consequently, whereas most members of the Jewish and English speaking community, and the general media, consider Michaud's allegations to lean towards antisemitism, Michaud supporters within the PQ and the sovereignist movement generally accuse the Michaud Affair to be the result of censorship and defamation against the "ethnic Quebecker" minority and its "rightful quest for political independence and autonomy". This questions is extremely emotive for both the PQ's more radical ethnic-nationalist supporters and the more radical Anglophone federalists of Quebec.

Considering the emotions evolved on both sides of the issue, objective analysis of the Michaud Affair remains an open question as most analysts still interested in the question are emotionally involved. Some less-involved observers in the media have expressed the view that although Michaud's comments were borderline and controversial as they could be interpreted as banalization of the Shoah, the comparisons made by his accusers to notable antisemites like Ernst Zundel were excessive and exaggerated Michaud's intent.

Quotations

It's never the same for them. So I said: it is not the same? The Armenians did not suffer, the Palestinians did not suffer, the Rwandans did not suffer. It's always (just) you. You are the only people who suffered in the history of humanity.

After that, I was fed up. And here we are, I am completely indignant... that some suggested to rename the metro station [named after] [Quebec historian and nationalist] Lionel Groulx, who was the spiritual father of two generations of Quebecers and is almost a Quebec idol.

It's the B'nai B'rith that did that, which was the extremist phalange... There has been world Zionism...

Yves Montand

Yves Montand (October 13, 1921 – November 9, 1991) was a French/Italian actor, born Ivo Livi in Monsummano Alto, Italy. Shortly after his birth, Montand's family left Italy for France. (Later, when they applied for French citizenship, his father pretended that they did so in order to escape Mussolini's regime, in fact they emigrated in 1921, whereas Mussolini didn't come into power until 1922.) Montand came to grow up in Marseille, where as a young man he worked in his sister's barber shop, and later on the docks. He began a career in show business as a music-hall singer. In 1944 he was discovered by Edith Piaf in Paris and she made him part of her act, becoming his mentor and lover. He would go on to international recognition, starring in numerous films. In 1951 Montand married the actress Simone Signoret, and they co-starred in several films throughout their respective careers. The marriage was by all accounts was fairly harmonious, lasting until her death in 1985, although Montand had a number of well-publicised affairs. During his career he acted in a number of American motion pictures as well as on Broadway. He was nominated for a Cesar Award for "Best Actor" in 1980 for the film "I comme Icare" and again in 1984 for "Garçon !" In 1986, after his international box-office draw power had fallen off considerably, the 65-year-old Montand gave one of his most memorable performances as the scheming uncle in the two-part film: Jean de Florette co-starring Gerard Depardieu and Manon des Sources co-starring Emmanuelle Béart. The film was a world-wide critical hit and raised Montand's profile somewhat in the US, which he took in stride, making an appearance on the David Letterman program. His only child, Valentin Montand, the son of his assistant Carole Amiel, was born in 1988. In his later years, he maintained a home in Provence until his death. He is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, France. In 2004, his stepdaughter Catherine Allégret (Simone Signoret's daughter from her first marriage) published a book titled World Upside Down where she contended that Montand had abused her sexually since she was five years old. Filmography, as actor, includes * IP5 (1991) * Jean de Florette (1986) * Manon des Sources (1986) * Garçon ! Yves Rocard

Yves-André Rocard (born Vannes May 22 1903; died Paris March 16 1992) was a French physicist who helped develop the atomic bomb for France.

After obtaining a double doctorate in mathematics (1927) and physics (1928) he was awarded the professorship in electronic

physics at the École normale supérieure in Paris.

As a member of a Resistance group during the Second World War he flew toEngland in a small plane as part of a dangerous mission, and was able to provide Britishintelligence with invaluable information. There he met up with Charles de Gaulle whonamed him Director of Research in the Forces Navales Françaises Libres (the Navy of Free France).

He became particularly interested in the detection of solar radio emissions by English Radar, which were causing military problems by jamming detection during periods of high emission, and was able to create a new radio navigational beam station.

After the war, he returned to France and became head of the physics department at the ENS. Whilst there he founded a radio observatory, having obtained two German "Wurzburg" Radar mirrors from the war.

From 1947 he became scientific advisor to the French military on the subject of atomic energy, eventually taking over from Frédéric Joliot-Curie after his dismissal. In 1951, he became scientific head of the programme that eventually led to the development of nuclear arms, and is often known as the father of the French A-Bomb and H-bomb.

Later in his career he studied subjects ranging from semiconductors to seismology. Eventually his professional reputation became tarnished by his increased research in less conventional subjects such as biomagnetism, dowsing and UFOs.

He was awarded the British CBE (1946), and the French Legion of Honour and Order of Merit.

He is the father of Michel Rocard, prime minister of France between 1988 and 1991.

Yves Saint-Laurent

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent (born August 1, 1936 in Oran, Algeria) is a French fashion designer. Early career Born to insurance-company manager Charles Saint Laurent and his socialite wife, Lucienne Mathieu, members of a family from Alsace-Lorraine that settled in North Africa during the Franco-Prussian War, Saint Laurent left home at the age of 17 to work for the designer Christian Dior. Following the death of Dior in 1957, Saint-Laurent at the age of 21 was put in charge of effort of saving the Dior house from financial ruin. Saint-Laurent's designs together, with his lover Pierre Bergé's financial acumen, helped save the firm. The couple split romantically in 1976 but remained business partners. Military service Shortly after this success he was conscripted to serve in the French army during the Algerian war of independence. After 20 days the stress of being hazed by fellow soldiers led the fragile Saint Laurent to be institutionalized in a French mental hospital, where he underwent psychiatric treatment, including electroshock therapy, for a nervous breakdown. The House of Yves Saint-Laurent In the wake of his nervous breakdown, Saint Laurent was released from Dior and started his own label with the now-famous initials of YSL. During the 1960s and 1970s the firm popularized fashion trends such as the beatnik look, tweed suits, tight pants and tall, thigh-high boots. Among his muses were Loulou de La Falaise, the daughter of a French marquis and an Anglo-Irish fashion model, and Betty Catroux, the half-Brazilian daughter of an American diplomat and wife of a French decorator. In 1993, the Saint Laurent fashion house was sold to the pharmaceuticals company Sanofi for approximately $600,000,000. In 1999 Gucci bought the YSL brand and Tom Ford designed the ready-to-wear collection while Saint-Laurent designed the haute couture collection. Since his retirement in 1998 Saint-Laurent has become increasingly reclusive and has spent a much of his time at his house in Marrakech, Morocco. In 2002, dogged by years of poor health, drug abuse, depression, alcoholism, criticisms of YSL designs, and problems with lead designer Tom Ford, Saint-Laurent and Gucci closed the illustrious design house of YSL. Yves Tanguy

Raymond Georges Yves Tanguy (January 5, 1900January 15, 1955) was a surrealist painter. He was born in Paris, France, the son of a retired navy captain. His parents were both of Breton origin. After his father's death in 1908, his mother moved back to her native Locronan, Finistère, and he ended up spending much of his youth living with various relatives.

In 1918, Yves Tanguy briefly joined the merchant navy before being drafted into the Army, where he befriended Jacques Prévert. At the end of his military service in 1922, he returned to Paris, where he worked various odd jobs. By chance, he stumbled upon a painting by Giorgio de Chirico and was so deeply impressed he resolved to become a painter himself in spite of his complete lack of formal training.

Through his friend Jacques Prévert, Tanguy was introduced about 1924 into the circle of surrealist artists around André Breton. Tanguy quickly began to develop his own unique painting style, giving his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1927, and marrying his first wife later that same year.

Throughout the 1930s, Tanguy adopted the bohemian lifestyle of the struggling artist with gusto, leading eventually to the failure of his first marriage. In 1938, after seeing the work of fellow artist Kay Sage, Tanguy began a relationship with her that would eventually lead to his second marriage.

With the outbreak of World War II, Sage moved back to her native New York, and Tanguy, judged unfit for military service, followed her. He would spend the rest of his life in the United States. Sage and Tanguy were married in Reno, Nevada on August 17, 1940. Toward the end of the war, the couple moved to Woodbury, Connecticut, converting an old farmhouse into an artists' studio. They spent the rest of their lives there.

In January 1955, Tanguy suffered a stroke at Woodbury, and died from it; his body was cremated. Preserved until Sage's death in 1963, his ashes were scattered by his friend Pierre Matisse on the beach at Douarnenez in his beloved Brittany, together with those of his wife.

Yves Tanguy's paintings have a unique, immediately recognizable style of nonrepresentational surrealism. They show vast, abstract landscapes, mostly in a tightly limited palette of colors, only occasionally showing flashes of contrasting color accents. Typically, these alien landscapes are populated with various abstract shapes, sometimes angular and sharp as shards of glass, sometimes with an intriguingly organic look to them, like giant amoeba suddenly turned to stone.

Yvette D. Clarke

Brooklyn's 40th councilmanic district elected Yvette Diane Clarke the New York City Council in 2001. She succeeded her mother, former City Councilmember Una S.T. Clarke. In Ms. Clarke's district, she has instituted an HIV/AIDS Task Force, a Sanitation Task Force, a Youth Task Force and organized an Ad Hoc Clergy Committee.

Upon graduating high school, Clarke earned a scholarship to Oberlin College in Ohio, where she received a B.A. in 1986. She also won a Congressional internship in 1983. Before coming to the City Council, Clarke was Director of Business Development for the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation and was the first Director of the Bronx portion of the New York City Empowerment Zone.

For a decade, Una Clarke held the seat her daughter now holds and US Congressman Major Owens broke with Democratic Party leadership to support Una's candidacy. Owens was the only elected official from Brooklyn to do so and he continued to campaign for Una despite the fact that he was then recovering from quintupple bypass heart surgery. At Owen's insistence, the 40th district was drawn in such a way as to help assure the election of the Council's first member of Carribbean descent. In 2000, Una ran to unseat Owens, telling reporters she owed him nothing, but she failed to oust him.

In the 2004 election cycle, Yvette Clarke, with only two and a half years service as an elected official, and the 41st councilmanic district's Tracy L. Boyland both ran for Owen's seat in the 2004 election cycle, an act that many saw as outright betrayal.

Though campaigning as populist Democrats, Yvette and Una Clarke have long maintained ties with prominent New York State Republicans. Under Governor George Pataki, Una has been a staff director for the Empire State Development Corporation, a patronage appointment, and the elder Ms. Clarke spearheaded the 2002 Pataki campaign among New Yorkers of Carribbean descent, despite the fact that Yvette endorsed Pataki oponent H. Carl McCall, the first black ever to be nominated by a major party for governor of New York State. Una became the treasurer of Yvette's campaign for Congress despite the fact that New York City's Campaign Finance Board imposed its largest ever fine ($58,943) on Una Clarke's campaign for City Council (the CFB was later forced to pursue payment of the fine in court). When Una ran against Congressman Owens four years ago, she delayed the disclosure of her major contributors until after she lost the primary, missing federal deadlines in violation of FEC regulations.
